5 Podcasts to Feed Your Mind & Soul

Ever feel like your mind craves intellectual stimulation? That your plain old music on the morning commute just isn’t doing it for you anymore? Podcasts are truly the best invention ever- not only do you get to swap out your daily dose of radio music for something that feeds your mind, there are actually some really cool people out there with really cool things to say. I’ve compiled a list of my top 5 podcasts that will bring spark to your daily bus ride or even your next networking conversation.

1. For When You’re Doubting Your Whole Life...

Second Life

This podcast has calmed my post-grad nerves more than once. Hosted by Hillary Kerr, the co-founder of whowhatwear, this podcast interviews a new woman in a power position each week. The key factor that ties these ladies together is that they never started off in the career or even industry they ultimately ended up in. Each one had a unique path and many career shifts before they eventually found what they love in their “second life”. Examples of guests include Kelly Oxford, stay-at-home mom turned best-selling author and producer and Emma Grede, co-founder of Good American Jeans (with Khloe Kardashian) who started as a prop stylist in the entertainment world.

2. For When You’re Feeling Like A Boss...

Girlboss Radio

Hosted by Sophia Amoruso, the founder of Nasty Gal, this podcast highlights companies either started or run by some total badasses. Guests range from Joanna Coles, Chief Content Officer of Hearst Magazines (and rumored Anna Wintour replacement) to Tamara Mellon, founder of Jimmy Choo. Sophia interviews producers, bloggers, talent agents and any other gal who has built a high-powered career for herself from the bottom. This podcast is super inspirational and makes you feel like you too can do anything you want.

3. For When You Want To Learn Something New...

The goop Podcast

Started by none other than actress Gwyneth Paltrow, the goop was actually a popular blog before it was a podcast. Now in audio form, Gwyneth brings in a combination of celebrity friends and credible doctors to discuss topics revolving around your inner psyche and being your best self. She covers personal topics such as what turns you on, how to defeat your inner critic and the anxious mind. This podcast is soothing and makes you think deeply about both your mental and physical health.

4. For Some Real Girl Talk...

The MIMIMBEE Podcast

This podcast is hosted by influencer Mimi Bouchard (you’ve definitely seen her Instagram) and is the daily dose of girl talk that you need. Mimi discusses all kinds of issues girls face on the daily such as, disordered eating, body image, self-care tips and even fuck boys. She goes deep into her experience with each topic, often bringing in guests who also have experience. Mimi is so honest and it never feels like she’s holding anything back, providing you with the raw details. The podcast feels like going to your best friend for advice.

5. For When You Need 5 Minutes of Brain Stimulation...

TED Talks Daily

We all know the feeling. You’ve been lying in bed all day (maybe even skipped a class or two) and feel like you’ve accomplished nothing on your To-Do list. The best way to get back on that grind is with a little brain stimulation. The TED Talks Daily podcast releases new podcasts every day which feature an expert giving a talk about a concept, experience or idea that they are knowledgeable in. Talks vary in length from three minutes to over an hour- whatever you have time for. With a wide range of topics, there is no way you can’t find something you’re slightly interested in or always wanted to learn about.

There are literally thousands of podcasts out there and something for everyone. In what little free time we have as students, I highly recommend checking out the browse section on the Podcasts app to find something you’re interested in. You never know who you’ll need to dazzle with your impressive knowledge on a quirky topic!
